Doing our part to help the economy

Even though we weren't originally intending on putting so much money back into circulation, we have recently done our part to help stimulate the economy.  Let me explain...

I was doing laundry on Friday when I heard a dripping sound while swapping the loads.  I investigated and discovered we had a leak from our washing machine hose that had been dripping down the side of the wall for long enough to make the paint slide down and bunch up and dry and get wet enough to slide and bunch again.  I quickly shut off the valve until Jimmie got home to look at it.

Upon seeing it was just a leaky hose we thought it would be a quick fix.  That's when Jimmie tipped the washer forward to take it out and water went rushing out from inside it.  Okay, it wasn't quite as small of a leak as we thought it was.  (Now it makes sense why every time I did laundry I had to run a quick cycle before putting in a load to get rid of the mildew smell.)  So, Jimmie moved the washer and squeegeed all the water to the drain.

When he stepped on the fiberglass pan we paid extra to have installed when we purchased the house in case of a washer leak, now had water coming out from underneath it.  Jimmie quickly pushed the pan up and discovered the "home builder" had not lined up the drain with the hole nor had anything besides a hope that the water would go through the 1/2 inch gap of air and make it to the pipe below to drain out.  The dry wall was all wet so we had to remove it and check the insulation behind it to make sure there was no mold or mildew there.  Out came the dry wall where the water damage was and also the dry wall on the other side since the fiberglass pan had scraped a half circle in it when we took it out.

After a trip to Home Depot, and four long nights, Jimmie got the dry wall replaced, it taped and plastered together, and the room painted so we could have our new washing machine delivered.  So even though we weren't expecting to spend over a thousand dollars to repair our laundry room and purchase a new washer, some positive came from it.

  • Now we have mold and mildew resistant dry wall and know so much more about dry wall than we ever wanted to
  • Our drip pan is now working right since the home builder had it tilted forward instead of towards the drain
  • Now we have a two-tone painted laundry room (the "white" the home builder had painted was more of a gray and there was no way we were going to paint the ceiling again)
  • I have a front loading washing machine that the kids love to watch as the clothes are washing
